The saffron flower (crocus sativus) is a delicate flower that demands constant attention and needs to be handled with care. It also has specific needs in terms of substrate, irrigation, temperature and sunlight.
Our high-quality saffron flower is grown from only the best, carefully-selected organic bulbs. Once selected, they are carefully planted with enough space for them to grow freely and make harvesting easier.
Because of the specific needs of saffron flowers, our company searched extensively for the best land to cultivate our plants. Now, all our plots of land are continually subjected to a series of laboratory analyses to detect traces of any contamination before planting.
This is a key element affecting the quality of saffron. Kosovo has a continental climate, meaning hot summers with little rain and cold winters with quite a bit of rain, which creates ideal conditions for cultivation.
A saffron flower is fragile and very quickly wilts. In order to ensure the best quality, harvesting needs to be done in the morning, after the dew has evaporated. The whole flower is plucked from the plant and placed in a bag to protect it from the sun, wind and rain. This process is done by hand by our trained workers who have a very delicate touch.
This is the process whereby the stigmas are separated from the flower. Again, to ensure quality, this process takes place on the same day as the harvest. Each flower needs to be held gently, opened up and then the crimson stigmas cut with custom-made scissors. Our facilities have strict codes of hygiene in order to eliminate any possibility of product contamination. In this respect, one of the main reasons why saffron in general is relatively expensive is because harvesting and pruning is a very long process requiring a great deal of patience and attention to detail.
This is one of the most important process steps affecting the quality of saffron, associated with its delicate nature and the laborious harvesting and pruning process. At our company, saffron is dried according to ISO standards and then independently analysed and certified as being of the highest quality. Once the drying process is complete, we package the saffron threads into our own custom-made containers which are then prepared for shipment.
This is the final stage in the process where saffron is weighed and packaged.
